I’m just not that into you (for now).
You guys know me. You know that I am, generally, a very monogamous knitter. The more flighty of you may argue that that I’m pathologically monogamous…one simply has to mention the six months that I spent exclusively working on Donegal and many knitters begin to twitch. For the most part, I like to devote myself whole-heartedly to one project – maybe a sock on the side, maybe a scarf for computer-knitting, but just one big project at a time.
After Donegal I had my first real bout of startitis, and it was pretty severe. After the casting-on flurry, I fell back to my usual habits and settled back down. I finished the Jaywalkers. I finished AJ’s Log Cabin Blanket. I finished the Baby Kimono, except for the ties. (I never did decide how to resolve the potentially ungrateful recipient problem, so the kimono is currently stuffed in a bag, but it is done.) I finished the stealth knitting, and will show it to you as soon as I deliver it to the recipient (who I have no doubt will be adequately grateful.) I’ve committed myself to frogging the dream scarf, and possibly turning it into a modified version of the River Rock Scarf, from No Sheep For You, since there are already a bajillion beads strung onto the yarn.
Which means that, logically, my next big project to finish should be the Print O’ the Wave stole.
I’m just not feeling it.
I love the pattern. I love the yarn. I love the combination of the pattern and the yarn. I want the finished product. I loved the process of knitting it, and I’m sure I will again.
But…
…not now.
I did a few rows up at the cabin, and I just. Could. NOT get into it. It’s lace – I love lace! Lace is the logical thing to knit in summer when it’s in the 90s! I know this! I just…can’t.
I know most of you will laugh at me for the overwhelming guilt I’m experiencing over my first intentional UFO, and you’re right to laugh. It’s not even like I’m abandoning it forever…just until the lace bug bites again. But…be gentle. It’s my first time tramping around like this.
Of course, if I’m going to set it aside, I feel like I should set it aside for something worthwhile. something like, perhaps…Eris. Which, though nothing is set in stone (Lee Ann! Stop holding your breath! I’ll let you know as soon as things are certain!) I hope to be wearing at Rhinebeck.
In the meantime…the first of the Trekking socks is done.
When I handed the completed sock to Bradon, he expressed surprise at the weight of it, and the teeny-tiny gauge. I handed him a ruler and asked him how many stitches I’m getting per inch.
Me+Trekking XXL+US size 0 needles=10 stitches/inch in stockinette
I think I was better off not knowing that.

I’ll just laugh quietly, since I’ve had as many as three lace shawls on needles at once.
Damn you people–now I’m starting to reconsider my responsible plan to skip Rhinebeck.

Wow, that is a lovely lace pattern. I won’t be laughing or judging though. I have Drunken Argyle…

Don’t feel guilty about needing to set the lace aside. Sometimes these things happen. No biggie!

If you’re not into it, definitely put it down for awhile. Monogamous or not, sometimes you’re just not into a pattern or style at that time. When I’m not into it, I just put it away for a time and come back to it. That first Trekking sock looks great, but sz 0 needles, i don’t know that I would want to know my spi either.

Hey! Is that the yarn you bought in Chicago?
I find that if I am not enjoying the knitting, I will knit less and therefore never get the thing done, so you’re probably better off setting the lace aside for the moment.
