A plea…
Yes, I know I owe you all a better post than this. I need (and want desperately) to tell you all about Estes, and how much I love knitting and fibery things and knitbloggers above all else. And I will – oh, will I ever. I’ve been composing it in my head for a day and a half. But I need to slog through something that resembles work before I can sit down and give that post the attention it deserves. I also owe a lot of e-mail, but you all know how bad I am about that…
…however, until, I can get to all that, I need your help.
In the last 40 minutes I have been consumed by the need to knit a hat. See, I’ve found myself in the possession of a single little skein of Koigu KPPPM, because I am a dumbass, and somehow the idea that I can knit a pair of socks with one skein of yarn seemed reasonable to me at some point. (I’d rather not discuss it. You should have seen the looks that the girls gave me when, over lunch up at Estes on Saturday, I casually asked if they thought I could knit a pair of sock with one skein of Koigu.)
Anyway, I have one lovely skein of Koigu, and in the last 40 minutes (I guess it’s getting to be 50 about now) it occurred to me with perfect clarity that the yarn wants to be a hat. And not just any hat…a lace hat. (I can totally get a lace hat out of one skein of Koigu…right?) And not just a lace hat, but a specific lace hat.
But I can’t remember which one.
I am 98% certain that I have actually seen the lace hat that I’m thinking of, and that I did not completely invent it in my imagination. It’s a tight-fitting lace hat with a star- or flower-like pattern that kind of swirls down from the crown. I checked the usual suspects for random patterns that I like (MagKnits and Knitty) and neither place has the hat that I can see in my head.
So…do any of you know the hat of which I speak? I know it’s not a lot to go on…the details are vague, but I’ll know it if I see it. Or, if I can’t locate the pattern (which seems likely at this point), do you have any other suggestions for a lace hat that I could knit with one little skein of Koigu KPPPM?

I knit an adorable baby hat–with lace–from one skein of koigu. Here’s the link to the pattern:

and a link to my finished hat:

Not exactly lace, more cables…but I thought I’d try. Good luck!

Could it be Kate Gilbert’s Shining Star? http://www.kategilbert.com/h_star.html

Could it be this one…
http://marniemaclean.com/patterns/Nautilus/index.html
or this one..
http://marniemaclean.com/patterns/Comet/index.html
both of them sort of fit that description and they were the first that popped into my head. Regardless.. they’re pretty.

I was going to suggest Marnie’s comet hat or Kate’s shining star hat, but those have both been linked, saving me valuable slacking time and allowing for more web surfing instead of eating lunch (as it is now 4:07 pm and the PERFECT time for lunch *doh*

Oh dear. I have no idea what it might be. But, couldn’t you, um, knit some lace footies with one skein of Koigu? I guess I don’t know the yardage on one skein of Koigu, either (I seem to remember it not being machine washable and that’s what I’ve stayed away from it for socks).

It’s not Grumperina’s Odessa? Not really lace, but definitely a star on top and swirls — and beads! http://www.magknits.com/feb06/patterns/odessa.htm

Odessa by Grumperina is my bet.

I was thinking Odessa, too. You could get a complementary solid and make socks with the koigu, using one for the heels, toes, and cuffs and the other for the rest of the sock. I’ve done that before, when I found a lovely orphan skein….

Not a clue. I hope it’s Odessa. I hate that when I can’t remember where I saw a pattern.

I was thinking Shedir too when I read your post: http://www.knitty.com/issuefall04/knittyF04surp.pdf

Oh, darn, I already commented. So saying, “YES! I do know! But I’m not telling until you update, catch up and dish” you would know for the lie and manipulation it was.
Darn.
So, was it Odessa?

Although I can’t help, my heart is with you. It was such fun to meet you Saturday, and your socks will be featured in my Estes trip post tomorrow!

IF you decide against the hat, I made an adorable bag from one skein of Koigu and some beads. It’s on my blog a few posts back–May 24’s “More Bitch Than Stitch”

If I ever get off my ass and finish the sex gloves, they’ll be made with one skank of KPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPM. If you decide hats are for the devil.

Better late than never…
Could the mysterious hat be the Nautilus hat ?
http://marniemaclean.com/patterns/Nautilus/index.html
Or maybe Halley’s Comet hat, which at least has the star shape?
